I was doing a little research for an article and happened to look at the definition for the word Demagogue. I had always assumed it was just a person that did things a certain way or held certain beliefs, but after reading its true meaning, I find it is actually a pretty negative characteristic. Webster defines Demagogue as “a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power” and “A political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.”
I don’t like to call names, but words and titles are descriptive. This one appears to apply to Obama in that he tries to steer clear of rational argument and rely more on appealing to prejudices.
This is shown in the way he tries to pit us against each other by encouraging envy of the wealthy and successful. By bringing them down, he destroys the motivation for the rest of us to want to excel and get ahead. What a true leader should do is encourage us to be better and to improve and progress. He should be telling us that we can improve our circumstances and he should be working to create the environment where we can do so, not destroy our incentive by bringing down those who have succeeded.
Having watched both party’s conventions and their campaigns so far, I think the Republicans are much more encouraging and the Democrats fall more on the Demagogue side of the line.
What do you think of the Presidential candidates?
