……….My answer is, No, they don’t. I was just talking to my Dad about why the same-sex marriage proponents are targeting The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, protesting on and vandalizing our Churches and Temples, and pretty much forgetting about everyone else. Well, what I came up with is that they target us because they know that no matter what they do, the response from us, and the leaders of the church will always be to treat them with kindness and love, no matter how ugly things get. They know that we will never retaliate, the leaders of the Church will never say anything hateful, and that the members are being instructed to be kind, civilized and Christ-like towards those who don’t agree with us……As many of us Yes on 8 supporters have said….things might not be the same if the No on 8 camp decided to protest elsewhere…..
I think it’s a cowards protest. They want to fight for their cause, but how hard is it to fight against nice, kind, loving, civilized and fair opposition? …..Not very hard….
Here’s an excerpt from an email I got from my Bishop before Sunday’s protest in Newport Beach. This is what he told members of our ward about how to treat the protesters:
“When you come to church and when you leave, please do so without reacting to
or interacting with the protesters. They have the right to protest on
public property and we are not to engage them in any way. Let us be
Christ-like and tolerant in all that we do. As stated on the church
“We hope that now and in the future all parties involved in this issue will
be well informed and act in a spirit of mutual respect and civility toward
those with a different position. No one on any side of the question should
be vilified, intimidated, harassed or subject to erroneous information.
It is important to understand that this issue for the Church has always been
about the sacred and divine institution of marriage – a union between a man
and a woman.
Allegations of bigotry or persecution made against the Church were and are
simply wrong. The Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage neither
constitutes nor condones any kind of hostility toward gays and lesbians.
Even more, the Church does not object to rights for same-sex couple
regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment
rights, or probate rights, so long as these do not infringe on the integrity
of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches.”
Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.”
